All six members of the Ivins Youth Council attended Local Officials Day at the Capitol on January 18th. We went up the day before because Senator Don Ipson hosted a dinner for us along with an after-hours tour of the Capitol.
Our new House Representative, Neil Walter, also attended the dinner. Representative Walter sat with our Youth Council members for almost an hour and a half answering questions and talking about the legislative process, issues, and projects the youth could be involved in. That was a highlight of the trip.
In addition, the Youth Council participated in group activities and mock committee hearings, and a general session for youth council members featuring a presentation and Q&A session by First Lady Abby Cox. The event ended with a presentation by Governor Spencer Cox who gave everyone a small preview of the State of the State presentation he planned for the following day. He also spent a lot of time answering questions that were on the minds of Youth Council members.
Our Youth Council Director, Jamy Dahle, was planning to be at the event, but work got in the way. Bob Morris, our Youth Council Advisor, and I got to go and had a lot of fun seeing how much our youth get out of this event.
