The Ivins Youth Council kicked off 2026 with an unforgettable experience at the opening of the Utah State Legislative session. It was an exciting two-day event that began with a tour of the State Capitol, followed by special visits to the House and Senate chambers with interns for our state representative, Neil Walter, and Senator Don Ipson.
The day concluded with dinner alongside Representative Walter, where Youth Council members had the opportunity to ask thoughtful questions, share their perspectives, and offer feedback on upcoming legislation. We are especially grateful to Representative Walter for spending more than two hours engaging our Youth Council on real, current issues.
Day two brought even more learning and leadership opportunities. After breakfast at the Capitol, the group participated in a statewide Youth Council event at the Salt Palace Convention Center. Two Ivins Youth Council members, Troy Clarkson and Sam Haws, presented a mock bill proposing a 3D-printed affordable housing pilot program. They confidently defended the proposal during a Q&A session, and the audience ultimately voted to approve their bill.
The event wrapped up with lunch and an inspiring presentation from Governor Spencer Cox.
It has been incredible to watch these future leaders step into the legislative world, engage in meaningful discussions, and share creative ideas for improving our communities. Experiences like this empower our youth, build confidence, and help shape the civic leaders of tomorrow.
