Leading with Respect

The Ivins City Youth Council coordinated a Dignity Index training session for all Washington County Youth Councils. As young leaders, youth council members have the power to shape the future of civic engagement in our communities. In this interactive workshop, they were introduced to the Dignity Index, a powerful tool for fostering respectful and solutions-focused conversations.

They learned how to score language for dignity, practice real-life applications in both political and personal settings, and collaborate with fellow Youth City Council members to develop a plan for bringing these principles into our communities. They left the workshop with practical skills to navigate difficult conversations and lead with dignity.

The Dignity Index is a powerful framework, originating in Utah, designed to promote respectful communication and understanding across diverse perspectives. Conceived by Tim Shriver, Tami Pyfer, and Tom Rosshirt, this initiative aims to foster greater empathy and understanding in both public and private spheres. The Index provides a practical tool for individuals and institutions to assess and improve the quality of their interactions, particularly in situations involving differing viewpoints or potential conflict.

We believe that the Dignity Index offers valuable principles for fostering a positive and inclusive environment within schools and youth organizations. It emphasizes the inherent worth of every individual, promotes civil discourse, and builds empathy, all of which are crucial for creating a respectful and harmonious community.
